Arne Tarara - Green Coding Berlin
Arne presented tooling for developers to measure energy-use & emissions.
At our community event in Berlin, Arne presented the open-source tooling that his team is building for developers to understand the energy-use of their applications. It is aimed at measuring the energy use during the execution of standard-usage scenarios (as required by the German Blue Angel certification), but can be used to get a good understanding of any running application.
It’s based on the RAPL interface and is under heavy development. Green Coding Berlin is also actively contributing to the Life Cycle Assessment methodology that is under development at the SDIA for digital resources (https://sdia.io/def-summary)

Joseph P. De Veaugh Geiss - KDE
Joseph showcased the first Blue Angel certified software application: KDE’s Okular.
At our community event in Berlin, Joseph demonstrated how KDE’s Eco Team (https://eco.kde.org) went through the certification process for the Blue Angel ecolabel, how easy it was for an open-source application and how they are putting a process in place for more open-source applications to be awarded the prestigious ecolabel (https://eco.kde.org/blog/2022-01-25-resource-efficient-software-and-blauer-engel-eco-certification/).

Measuring the environmental footprint in cloud and virtualized environments: An approach to trustworthy estimates.
At our community event in Berlin, Tom presented an update on the SDIA’s digital environmental footprint framework (https://sdia.io/def-summary) with mathematical formulas to convert digital resources into environmental impact, supporting the Life Cycle Assessment of digital products & services. Benoit Petit, Boavizta
Embedding environmental footprint measurements in CI/CD runners with Boavizta’s boagent.
Benoit demonstrated the SDIA & Boavizta’s test system in which we embedded the various measurement tools (Scaphandre by Hubblo for RAPL) and IPMI via the Environmental Data Agent (Blockheating) to measure the energy-use of software when tests & builds are executing. It’s work in progress, and this gives a first glimpse at the progress.

What’s the purpose of an ecolabel for software? Jens gives an insight into the various types of ecolabels and explains the reasoning behind the Blue Angel.
At our community in Berlin, Jens took some time to dive deep on ecolabels, provide a clear overview of the various types of labels, what the benefits are to society, policymaking and the market and then goes on to turn the theory into practice with the Blue Angel series for desktop software, co-location, data centers & cloud applications.
Interesting background: The blue angel has been around for some time and is used as the main ecolabel for the procurement of the German Government. It all started with paper being certified and it since has evolved to many product categories.
